DIY: Build Your Own Birdhouse (Step-by-Step Nesting Box Guide)

If you love wildlife, a birdhouse is a must-have in your garden. It offers birds a safe shelter from cold and rain, while adding life and charm to your outdoor space. In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to build a sturdy birdhouse or nesting box. Including materials, dimensions and recommended Batavia tools.

Why build a birdhouse?

Birds use nesting boxes not only for breeding but also for shelter during cold winter months. Species such as great tits, blue tits, sparrows and pied flycatchers are especially attracted to wooden birdhouses in gardens.

Good to know: An entrance hole of approximately 32 mm is ideal for great and blue tits. Do not add a perch below the entrance, it makes access easier for predators.

Materials & dimensions

Use untreated wood about 18–20 mm thick. Rough sawn timber or exterior-grade plywood works best.

Part Quantity Size
Side panels 2 23 × 15 cm (cut at an angle)
Front & back panels 2 23 × 15 cm
Base 1 15 × 15 cm
Roof 1 16 × 16 cm

Additional materials

  • 2 small wooden battens (for extra support)
  • Thin mounting strip for hanging
  • Nails or screws
  • Wood glue
  • 32 mm hole saw
  • Sandpaper or round file
Tip: Drill small drainage holes in the base so moisture can escape.

Step-by-step: build your birdhouse

  1. Cut all parts to size. Cut the side panels at an angle so the roof fits neatly.
  2. Drill the entrance hole. Use a 32 mm hole saw in the front panel.
  3. Assemble sides and base. Use wood glue and nails or screws.
  4. Attach the front and back panels. Pre-drill to avoid splitting.
  5. Install the roof. Let it slightly overhang to protect against rain.
  6. Sand all edges smooth. Remove sharp corners or splinters.
  7. Finish the exterior only. The inside should remain untreated.

Safety tip: Make sure no sharp screws or nails protrude inside the birdhouse.

Where should you hang a birdhouse?

  • At least 1.8 meters above the ground
  • Preferably facing north or east
  • Avoid direct sunlight and heavy rain exposure
  • Ensure a clear flight path
  • Keep at least 3 meters distance between multiple birdhouses
Maintenance: Clean the nesting box annually in autumn so it’s ready for the next breeding season.

FAQ: Birdhouse DIY

When should I hang a birdhouse?

You can hang it year-round, but late winter or early spring is ideal before nesting season starts.

Should I paint the birdhouse?

Only treat the exterior with water-based stain or paint. Leave the interior untreated.

What entrance hole size should I choose?

32 mm works well for great tits and blue tits. Smaller holes attract smaller species.
